Ragdoll Cat

blue colorpoint ragdoll cat

The ragdoll is so names because of its ability to relax totally, like a ragdoll, when handled. This, along with its intelligence, even temperament and devotion to its owners, makes the Ragdoll a great pet for families with children. Did you know that the Ragdoll’s color, as with all colorpointed cats, is not fully developed until it is about two years old, and the cat continues to grow until it is about four years of age.

History

The Ragdoll was developed in California during the 1960s from a white longhair and a seal point Birman. Subsequently, Burmese was added to the mix. The breed has been surrounded in controversy ever since, and although recognized for championship in 1965, it has yet to achieve that status with the cat fanciers association (CFA), the largest cat association in the United States. It has recently been recognized in Britain but not as yet in many other countries. One of the controversial claims made for the Ragdoll is that it does not feel pain, but this certainly has no basis. The Ragdoll’s habit of lying relaxed and unprotesting when handled may have led to this misconception.

Description

The ideal Ragdoll has a large, well bones, muscular and substantial body, somewhat elongated. It is massive across the shoulders and chest and heavy in the hindquarters with a tendency to develop a fatty pad (greater omentum) on the lower abdomen. The head is a broad modified wedge with the appearance of a flat plane between ears. The medium length muzzle is round, with a well developed chin. The medium length nose has a break between the eyes and the leather harmonizes with the coat. The neck is short, heavy and strong. The eyes are sapphire blue, large and oval. They are wide set and in line with the base of the ear. The medium sized ears are wide at the base with rounded tips. They are set to gently cup the skull and continue the wedge shape.

The strong boned legs are medium to medium long, with the back legs longer than the front. The fur on the front legs is short and thick, while that on the hind legs is medium to long, thick and feathery. The paws are large, round and feather tufted with pad colors that harmonize with the coat. The tail is long, fluffy and in proportion to body length.

The plush, silky coat is medium long to long, being longest around the neck and other edges of the face. Although the fur is non matting, the coat must be combed daily with a  wide toothed comb to remove tangles and dead hair, then brushed gently with  along bristled brush. This is especially important at the end of winter as the weather warms and the heavy coat is shed, to reduce the possibility of hairballs forming.

Varieties

The Ragdoll is a colorpointed cat and comes in lilac point, blue point, chocolate point and seal point in each of three patterns, colorpoint, mitted and bicolor. The CFA will accept only the bicolor for championship showing, while some other associations have added the colors of red point, tortie point and lynx point.

Temperament

Known for its loving adaptable nature, the Ragdoll quickly becomes attached to its owner. It is gentle, intelligent and even tempared.

When a Ragdoll is picked up it is supposed to go limp, and that is how it came to be named.

There is a far fetched story that the first Ragdoll kittens are said to have inherited this characteristics, together with an apparent resistance to pain, because their white semi longhair mother, Josephine, had been injured in a road accident.

Blur Colorpointed Ragdol Cat
A Blue Colorpointed givesa  good overall impression of the breed’s solid, powerful build. Colorpoints have the traditional pattern of complete colored mask, ears, legs and tail.

It is more likely that the Ragdoll’s docile nature arises from a happy coincidence of character genes. The breed was created in California in 1963. An early alternative name was Cherubim, while some variations are called Ragamuffins.

Seal Colorpointed Ragdol Cat
A Seal Colorpointed Ragdoll has dinstinct, deep brown points. A triangular nose blaze denotes the true look of the Bi-color Ragdoll. Bib, chest, underbody and front legs are also white.

Although the original breeder claimed non pedigreed parentage, it is likely that Birman and Burmese genes were present somewhere along the line. However, in the majority of cats the dominant white spotting gene creates the look of the Mitted variety, while the one that produces a similar effect in the Birman is recessive.

Mitted Ragdoll Cat
White gloves on the forepaws and longer gauntlets on the rear legs are the distinctive features of the Mitted Ragdoll and bear witness to the probably Birman genes in the breeding program.

The Ragdoll is a cat of powerful build, with big, round paws and a long, bushy tail. Its head is broad and wide cheeked with a slightly retrousse nose and wide eyes of deep sapphire. The three recognized main groupings are: Colorpointed, Mitted and Bi-color. The Mitted has colorpointed features contrasting with a pale body, plus white gloved front feet and rear legs white to the hock or beyond. The Bi-color is white on the chin, bib, chest and underbody with a triangular blaze over its nose.
